So, I started all this last week, without really taking the fact that we were going to Bats Day at the Fun Park into account. I picked up a bunch of supplies on Wednesday or Thursday, and had the fountain pump delivered Friday morning. I realised when the pump arrived that I didn't have the right sized hose to feed the water into the grow bed. Not a big deal, when all is said and done.
Today, Tuesday, I went to Home Despot to pick up some PVC pipe for the grow bed, a plug-cap for the pipe, and an elbow joint so the hose will have a place to empty into. I also remembered to pick up PVC cement, to secure all this together. I'm so clever.
Except for the fact that I can't trim down the pipe because I don't have a hacksaw handy. I will try and get that dealt with, tomorrow. We have 2 sets of plumbers coming to the house - hopefully somebody will let me cut my 2' pipe down to fit the growbed/shoe box.
On the plant front, the tomato seeds have sprouted! I have wee little tomato sprouties! Yay! I'm going ahead and letting this thing grow in regular soil for now, and will transfer them to the gravel grow bed when I have the pump running. I'm debating keeping either the tomatoes or the strawberries separate entirely, and growing them in the upside-down fashion, in a hanging bucket (a la "topsy-turvy" only more durable).

Tomorrow's plan:
- Drilling holes in the PVC pipe for spread-out watering.
- Drilling holes in the grow bed for draining into the fish tank.
- Line the grow bed shoebox bottom with some porous material that won't let the water drain out too fast. Probably some folded cotton fabric.
- Get the pump pumping into the grow bed, and let run overnight, to cycle the water.
I don't plan on adding fish until Thursday at the earliest. I figure I want to let the system run overnight, do any debugging/adjusting the next day, let that run overnight, and if it looks good, add fish.
